ABOUT THE AUTHOR

On Saturday, March 6, the City of Forney held its first Recycling Roundup, with help from members of the Forney Lions Club and other groups.

The Roundup took place in Forney Community Park. During the peak of the three-hour event, autos laden with paper, cardboard and discarded electronic equipment were coming to unload at a rate of approximately one each minute. The Roundup lasted from 9:00 a. m. until about noon.

Electronic equipment that was accepted for recycling included monitors, TVs, computers, stereos, VCRs, household copiers, hard drives, CD-ROMs, and batteries. Cardboard and paper were also accepted, but cardboard had to be broken down and flattened before it could be recycled.

Eyeglasses and sunglasses were accepted in any condition—both frames and lenses. The Forney Lions Club collects these items in a perpetual drive to help individuals who can’t afford new glasses.

The recycling effort is part of a general trend to “go green” by contributing to a cleaner environment and conserving energy. The pre-recycling shredding of paper documents that are no longer needed also protects against identity theft.

Besides the Forney Lions Club, the Recycling Roundup was conducted with the assistance of Alliance Document Shredding, ECS Refining Texas, and Environmental Co-Op of Kaufman County, with support from Chick Fil A.
