The Forney Sole Sisters held a balloon launch Thursday evening, October 1 to build public awareness of both the reality and hope of breast cancer.
The balloon launch, held on the first day of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2009, took place at the family pavilion in Forney Community Park.
The Sole Sisters is a group of Forney and Forney-area women who are preparing to take the annual Susan G. Komen 60-mile walk through downtown Dallas in November. The walk is for breast cancer patients, breast cancer survivors, and their supporters—both female and male.
The Sole Sisters were at the park setting up the launch supporters began arriving at approximately 6:00 p. m. Each participant was given a pink helium-filled balloon to release at a pre-arranged moment to signify hope and eventual triumph over breast cancer, which is one of the leading killers of women in the U. S. Each balloon bore the name of a breast cancer patient or survivor.
The launch came a few minutes before its pre-arranged time so the balloons could be launched in advance of a quick-moving thunderstorm that was starting to approach Forney shortly after 6.
Refreshments were served to participants before and after the balloon launch.
