A former Forney High School discus thrower was key to winning the discus competition at the 2009 Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships Sunday, May 10.
Trailing heading into the final throw, Katie Hanie, now a junior at Texas State, hurled the discus 159-1 (48.50m) to overtake McNeese State’s D’Ann Washington for the title with an NCAA Regional qualifying mark.
In other track and field action last week, Lauren Watts and Dennis Yeats, both former Forney track standouts, performed well at the SLC Outdoor Track and Field Championships for Stephen F. Austin University.
Watts finished 2nd in the 400 hurdles in a time of 1:01.25. Watts was also a member of SFA’s 4X400 Relay Team which finished 2nd in a time of 3:42.16. It should be noted that when an athlete finishes in the top 3 at the Southland Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships, they are automatically named All Conference.
Dennis Yeats finished 4th in the 10,000 meters (time of 31:43.22) and 6th in the 5,000 meters (time of 15:11.91).
