ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Forney (Friday, February 6)—In a workmanlike performance, West Mesquite beat Forney by a count of 57-41.

With the win,  West Mesquite improved to 7-3 in District 15-4A play while with the loss, Forney fell to 10-16 overall and to 0-9 in District 15-4A play.

The West Mesquite Wranglers are a disciplined and well coached team. They don’t have any superstars on their team. They are a collection of good basketball players that play well together.

With that in mind,  Forney knew that they had to play well to win.  Led by the excellent play of Grant Shaw, Forney hung right with the Wranglers . Late in the 3rd quarter after a fast break lay up by Zac Seaman, Forney trailed by just 5 at 36-31. At this point in the game, one question was at the forefront of my mind, The question was could the Rabbit men pull off an upset and pick up their first District 15-4A victory of the 2008-09 season? Unfortunately, the answer to my question was no.

After the Rabbit men had pulled to within 5 at 36-31, West Mesquite answered Forney’s challenge with a  decisive 10-0 run. This run, which began late in the 3rd quarter and continued into the early moments of the 4th quarter, helped the Wranglers stretch their advantage to 15 at 46-31.After this run, West Mesquite was able to cruise home for the victory.

Javier Soria led the Wranglers in scoring with 17 points. He was joined in the double figures scoring club by Dennis Bio and Mike Love. Both Bio and Love scored 10 points in the game.

Forney was led offensively by Grant Shaw. Shaw played an outstanding game as he scored a team high 13  points. In my opinion, Shaw has played at a 1st-team All District level all season.

Forney will play their final home game of the 2008-’09 season on Friday, February 13, vs. Terrell.
