by SHIRLEY HELTON, MTA Teacher

On Monday, September 29, 2008, Claybon Elementary had its first MTA parent meeting of the year. The evening began at six o’clock with refreshments being enjoyed by parents and students.  Ms. Shirley Helton, MTA teacher at Claybon Elementary, welcomed parents and visitors.

MTA, which stands for Multi-sensory Teaching Approach, is a program designed for students exhibiting characteristics of dyslexia.  Ms. Helton gave an overview of the MTA Reading program and explained her classroom procedures.

A video, “Parents Are Teachers Too”, was shown to demonstrate strategies that parents can use at home to work with their child.  In addition, helpful hints were also shared with parents to help establish a good “Home Study Routine”. Tips were discussed on how to establish a home study area, as well as, how to complete homework assignments and return them to school completed, correct, and on time.

Thanks to all the parents who attended! We hope that we were able to provide some useful information to our parents who were able to come.
