The results from the Hispanic Heritage Month Contest are in!

We wanted to celebrate with an essay contest for the upper grades (3rd-6th) and a drawing contest for grades Pre- k through 2nd.

The rules were as follows:

Essay Rules
• No longer that 2 pages –your best work! (typed –optional)
• About a famous Hispanic person
• Interesting and informative
• Cannot be copied from a book (no plagiarism)

Illustration Rules
• 81/2 X 11 paper
• Crayons, markers, map pencils, chalks or oil pastels
• No tracing
• It can be a portrait of a famous Hispanic person or a representation of a piece of art work done by a famous Hispanic Artist

Students in grades 3-, at Blackburn Elementary were asked to study famous Hispanic men and women. They completed many hours of research in the computer labs to compile information for their essays. The essays had to tell about a famous Hispanic person. There were numerous entries but the most popular people chosen to write about were Selena, George Lopez, Frido Kahlo, Christina Aguilera and Isabel Allende. The winner’s essays are posted on the bulletin board by the office.

In art class over the past several weeks, students have been studying and learning about Pablo Picasso and Juan Miro, two famous Hispanic people. The students in first and second grades were asked to draw and paint in a similar fashion to these artists.

The results were stupendous! The paintings were breathtaking and it was quite hard to choose the best ones for the contest. The winners are also displayed on the bulletin board by the office.
