Mrs. Karla Richardson, our school counselor decided to help make students aware of current events in the world around us and generate some spirited competition at the same time.  She initiated the Red River Rivalry Shootout.

Students and teacher’s took sides quickly and joined in the fun activities.  The current event topic was: Texas Longhorns versus Oklahoma Boomer Sooners.

Morning announcements played portions of the schools’ fight songs and encouraged students to join in the competition.  Our 3rd through 6th grade students had an essay contest.  The essay topic:  Who is going to win and why do you think that team is better? The Pre-K through 2nd grade had a drawing contest and they had to draw their favorite between the Texas Longhorn or the Oklahoma Boomer Sooners.

Teachers joined in on the fun as well, decorating their rooms and the hallways in honor of their favorite team. Some even engaged in some friendly re-decorating to try to gain more attention for their team of choice. Our 6th grade English teacher, Mr. Michael Floyd, made Longhorn hats for all of Mrs. Valerie Garrison’s PK students, and taught them how to do the “hook-’em-horns” sign. Mrs. Garrison’s class is shown in the photo cheering on the Texas Longhorns.

Friday, during the announcements, the winners of the contests were announced.

The Essay contest winners were: Kylee Brees, Sara Tackett and April Conner.  All of the winners wrote about the Texas Longhorns.

The winners for the drawing contest were Aniston Ross with a Texas Longhorn, Iris Sorenson with an Oklahoma Sooner and Tessa Shaver with a Texas Longhorn. A big congratulations to all the Texas Longhorns fans. The Longhorns won the big game on Saturday, 16 to 13!
