ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Grief is never fun—particularly when the grief comes at the death of a son or daughter.

But Forney resident Mary Penn’s grief following the death of her son, Justin Anderson, last year has paid dividends, as painful as it has been. Two pieces of art she submitted won top honors during 2009 art judging at the Kaufman County Fairgrounds.

An oil painting of Justin with his brother, Drew, and their skateboards, took Best of Category in the show. An ink piece of Justin’s profile, with images from his life depicted in the sky, took the Grand Championship ribbon as well as Best of Category.

“It was my therapy and escape for me after my son, Justin Anderson, died on January 18, 2008,” Mary said. “After the death of a child, focusing and functioning are very hard tasks. Denial and escape are part of the process. I found my escape in painting and drawing. I did a portrait of Justin for each of his brothers and sisters for Christmas, and one for myself.”

Mary said she was overwhelmed that her talent won such high recognition in the show.

“I have found peace and comfort and accomplishment, through my grief, in my artwork,” Mary said.
